Vaitheeswaran Kovil

Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu

The temple where Shiva is worshipped as the divine physician. Also world-famous as the center of Nadi Astrology — ancient palm leaf manuscripts that reveal one's destiny.

History

Vaitheeswaran Koil, the shrine of Vaidyanathaswamy at the town that bears the Lord's name near Sirkazhi, is among the most venerated healing temples of the Tamil country. It stands in the old Chola heartland of the Kaveri delta and is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, glorified in the Tevaram by the Nayanmars Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar. Here Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanathar, the supreme physician who cures the diseases of body and soul, and his consort as Thaiyalnayaki (Balambika), who holds the medicine. The temple is also one of the nine Navagraha (planetary) temples of the region, the abode of Angaraka, the planet Mars, which makes it the foremost shrine for those seeking relief from Chevvai (Mangal) dosham and obstacles to marriage. Over the centuries the town grew into the great centre of Naadi astrology, where readers consult ancient palm-leaf manuscripts said to have been composed by rishis such as Agastya. Pilgrims have come for generations not only for darshan but for cures, performing the temple's distinctive healing offerings at the Siddhamirtham tank.

Mythology & Legend

The Legend

Vaitheeswaran Koil is, before all else, the temple of Shiva the divine physician, and its central legend is one of healing. After the long war in which Murugan destroyed the demon Soorapadman, the warriors of the celestial army, and Murugan's commander Veerabahu, were grievously wounded. They came to this place, where Shiva as Vaidyanathar, the lord of medicine, with the Goddess Thaiyalnayaki holding the curative oils and herbs, healed their every wound and restored them whole. From that grace the Lord became known as the divine doctor and the town as Vaitheeswaran Koil, and ever since the afflicted have come here believing that no disease is beyond the physician of physicians. It is also told that Murugan himself worshipped at this shrine and was given the Vel by his mother before going to battle, binding the healing Lord and the warrior son together in the temple's story.

Angaraka and the Planet Mars

The temple is one of the nine Navagraha shrines of the Kaveri region, and the planet enshrined here is Angaraka, Mars, called Chevvai or Sevvai in Tamil. By tradition Angaraka was afflicted with disease and worshipped Shiva the physician at this place, and was cured and granted his station among the planets. Because of this, Vaitheeswaran Koil is the great parihara (remedy) shrine for those who suffer from Chevvai or Mangal dosham in their horoscopes, which is held to delay marriage and disturb married life. Devotees worship Angaraka, especially on Tuesdays, the day of Mars, and during his transits, for relief, timely marriage and harmony.

Naadi Astrology and the Palm-Leaf Predictions

Vaitheeswaran Koil is the world-renowned home of Naadi Jothidam (Naadi astrology). By tradition, ancient sages such as Agastya inscribed the life-stories and destinies of countless individuals on palm leaves, which have been preserved and copied across generations and are kept by hereditary families of readers in the town. A seeker's leaf is traced using the impression of the right thumb (for men) or left (for women), after which the reader recites details of the person's name, family and future. The town's streets are lined with these reading centres, and many pilgrims combine a Naadi consultation with their worship of the healing Lord.

The Offerings That Cure: Jaggery, Salt, Pepper and Thiruchandu

The temple is famous for offerings made specifically for the curing of disease. Devotees dissolve jaggery in the Siddhamirtham tank, and offer salt and pepper, as vows for relief from ailments; the tank's water, believed to carry amrita, is taken and bathed in for its healing virtue. Sufferers of skin disease apply the sacred soil from the temple anthill (puttru mann) and the holy ash. Above all, pilgrims receive the Thiruchandu, a medicinal preparation of sacred ash, which is taken or applied as the physician Lord's own medicine. These living practices make a visit here as much an act of healing as of worship.

Architecture

The temple is a classic Chola-delta shrine, west-facing, entered beneath a five-tiered Rajagopuram, with the large Siddhamirtham tank set before it. Within, the sanctum of Vaidyanathaswamy holds the Lord as the divine physician, with the shrine of the Goddess Thaiyalnayaki (Balambika) nearby. A particularly prominent shrine is that of Muthukumaraswamy (Subramanya), the Murugan of this temple, who holds the Vel; his sannidhi is among the most thronged in the complex. The temple also enshrines Angaraka (Mars) as the presiding planet, along with the Nataraja sabha and other parivara deities. Around the precinct lie the spots tied to the temple's healing legends, including the Jatayu Kundam associated with the Ramayana, while the surrounding streets are lined with the Naadi astrology reading centres for which the town is known.
